Hello to all my new working from home friends! There are so many fun and exciting aspects to working from home! With that being said, though, there are definitely some cons to working from home as well. I’m here to share some mistakes I’ve made when working from home, so you don’t have to! Keep reading to find out which 5 Mistakes To Avoid Making When Working From Home…
Don’t Start Working In Bed // One of the most attractive aspects to working from home is not having a commute! I went from over an hour commute into NYC every day to waking up and having my entire office (laptop) laying on my bedside table. In the beginning I would wake up, grab my laptop, and start working in bed. Hours would pass by and before I knew it, it was 1pm and I was still in bed in my PJs! I thought I was working in a super productive manner, but after a while I started not feeling great about myself. I started feeling like a bum, even though I was getting lots of work done! Leave your laptop in your work space, don’t bring it into your bedroom! Before opening up your computer each morning, allow yourself to enjoy a morning routine. Here’s a sample routine!
-Get Dressed/ Get Ready
-Make Your Bed
-Drink a Glass of Water
-Eat a Sit Down Breakfast
-Do Something You ENJOY (some examples: meditate, read a chapter of a book, journal, workout, do your makeup, listen to a podcast, etc.)
Don’t Forget To Stand Up // One thing that will take a little getting used to is the lack of physical interruptions. For instance, at home you don’t have to get up and talk to your co-worker in their office or you might not have to walk down the hall anymore to the printer room. One way to remind yourself to stand up & stretch your legs is setting timers on your phone. I also like to drink out of a small water glass that way each time I finish a glass I have to get up to refill it.
Don’t Get Lost In Your Phone // Personally, when I worked in an office I was always super mindful of the time I spent on my phone. Apart from my lunch break I would maybe check my phone once in the morning and once in the afternoon. At home you’re used to being on your phone and having it readily accessible all the time. Consider putting your phone in another room or on do not disturb so you won’t be interrupted. *Obviously for bloggers/influencers/content creators a lot of your work is done through your phone so this doesn’t apply as much for you!
Don’t Let Your Snacking Get Out of Hand // This is actually a super simple fix. If you want some chips or pistachios or cookies, don’t take the entire box/bag and plop it down next to your computer. Instead, portion your snack out onto a plate or into a bowl. If you finish your snack and want more, A) you’re forcing yourself to stand up and stretch your legs, which is always good! and B) you’re aware of just how much you’re eating.
Don’t Forget About Boundaries // For those of you who are used to working a 9-5 job and are now adjusting to working at home, hopefully this won’t be as difficult for you. Stepping away from work at a normal time is crucial to stay productive and sane. For those of you who are getting used to being your own boss, this is near impossible. Figure out a way that works for YOU to put away work and focus on yourself and your family.
