Style Inherited Just Got…Fluffier!

I’ve been dying to share this news with you all for quite some time now, and today is finally the day! Yippie!! If you haven’t already guessed from the name of this blog post, I’m getting a puppy!! I’ll be bringing home a little, female Maltipoo the second week of September and I couldn’t be more excited! (I haven’t decided on a name yet either, so comment below with any suggestions. Please!)
I’ll be doing many more puppy-related posts in the future, but for now I wanted to answer a few basic questions/share my excitement with you all! So here we go!
Why a Maltipoo?
Ha this is kind of a funny story…I guess the short answer is because Bichon Frises are freaking expensive! Like over $2,800 expensive! But there’s a lot more that went into picking the breed aside from the price tag. Lemme explain– My first puppy, Cookie, was a Bichon Frise (and perfect!), but she looked nothing like a Bichon. She looked more like a scruffy little thing and she was the runt of the litter. So while she technically was a Bichon she definitely resembled the coat type, personality, and size of a Maltipoo. I loved everything about Cookie, my first dog, and especially her size and ability to come everywhere with me! She was always my side-kick and I loved how “errand-friendly” she was (a term I just made up, but describes her perfectly). One time my Grandma and I actually had lunch with Cookie at an Applebees. Yes really! For those who don’t know you really aren’t allowed to have non-service dogs in restaurants, but Cookie was so chill that she just sat in her carrier the whole time next to me as I handed her chunks of chicken from my salad. Now, Maltipoos are small, but not teacup small and that’s important here. Sure teacup puppies are cute, but there a little toooo small for my preference and there is definitely some science to back up the breeding for these small puppies to be unhealthy. So no teacup puppies for me, just a little baby Maltipoo!
What other breeds did I consider?
I love Havanese (and kind of had this dream of going to Cuba and bringing one home), but they’re typically 15-20lbs and I wanted something more in the 10-15lbs range. [However, I did meet a Havenese the other day that was full grown and only 10 lbs, so I guess they do exist, but not as easy to come by.]
I also considered Bichipoos (Bichon x Toy Poodle), but it ended up just working out time wise for a Maltipoo.
Where am I getting my Maltipoo from?
I think I’ll dedicate a whole blog post to this in the future… but here’s just a little backstory for the meantime: While we got my first puppy, Cookie, from a breeder, we always tell people we feel like we rescued her. The house that the breeder lived in was disgusting. There were too many dogs to count in such a small space and the breeder definitely had no standards when it came to cleanliness or best practices. And it’s a double edged sword if you think about it…on the one hand we supported her terrible business by buying Cookie from her, but on the other hand, we gave Cookie such an amazing life that this woman wouldn’t have given her.
Let me put out there also before we dive into my breeder research, I do not support shopping at puppy stores. At all! Stores like Puppy Love get their puppies from puppy mills, which are terrible places! Dogs are kept in cages too small to move and mothers are forced to be constantly pregnant. Anyway- puppy mills suck and it’s difficult to distinguish bad breeders who have borderline puppy mill practices from breeders who actually care about their animals and have standards.
It took me a long time to find a breeder I felt I could truly trust. My breeder was nothing but kind and open about her practices and she even gave me the contact info of her vets and previous customers. A family that previously adopted from her were alumni from Roanoke College, the same college I attended, and speaking with them really sealed the deal. I knew I could trust fellow Roanoke-ers! Another great sign was that I was on a waiting list and the people ahead of me were repeat customers. Clearly you wouldn’t get a second dog from someone if the first one wasn’t exactly what you hoped for (and most importantly, healthy!).
What are you going to name her?
Not sure yet, I have this thing where I’ve always named my pets after foods. Not joking…I’d love to keep on that same trend, but I also really like the name Cooper! Please send me suggestions though, this puppy needs a name!

I’m so glad you confirmed it, we have been looking all over the place, doing research and didn’t trust any other breeders or pet stores, I also went to yelp to read all the reviews from Windy way pups and got in touch with someone that adopted a puppy from her two years ago, I wanted to know their experience. The lady said the same thing as you about the breeder… so the morning Cindy said she will be posting pics of the babies, knowing how difficult it is to get a puppy from her, me and my husband woke up super early that morning and had our strategy, we set up 3 laptops, our phones, etc.. refreshing her page every second as she said, she will give the puppy “first come first” lol so imagine the stress… so as soon as she posted the pic I had my finger ready to hit to claim the puppy! We were very lucky!!! She said to me over the phone that she had 300 texts plus 32 calls from people trying to get one of the puppies (there were only 3). We are so excited!!! Since then, we have been buying all kind of stuff from the heart beat stuff animal, to playpen, food, treats, toys, shampoo, etc.. everything🙈 to welcome our little girl!!!

Yay! I’m so excited and so happy for you! When we got Ranger she was the only girl in the litter and I had first pick so it was actually extremely easy since the decision was made for me! It feels like so long ago already… cherish every moment because they grow up so fast! Keep me posted, I’d love to see pics when you bring her home!
