Happy Friday! It’s an especially great Friday because my sister comes home tonight AND we leave for Rome tomorrow! Yippie! Speaking of traveling, it’s been a little over two weeks since I got back from my quick trip to Charleston and gosh, I miss it! This was my third time in Charleston and honestly, it doesn’t get old. Apart from the history, gorgeous houses, and nice weather, I’m a huge fan of the food scene that exists in this city. Keep reading for a brief recap of my most recent trip to Charleston during the holidays and also for my vegetarian friendly restaurant recommendations!
Starting with where we stayed… I’ll be honest, I didn’t love it and I wouldn’t stay there again. With this trip being so last minute we didn’t have a ton of options, so I booked us at The Vendue. Previously I’d stayed at The Andrew Pinkney Inn and The HarbourView and LOVED both of those places. 10/10 would recommend them.
I won’t get into a ton of detail, but to summarize, The Vendue lost power in parts of the hotel for some reason that wasn’t made super clear to us on the night we arrived. We were lucky that our room didn’t lose power, but we were without hot water and again, weren’t told when that would be back. It definitely stunk to be without a shower especially after a day of travel and running around the city. We made the best of it though and survived! I get that stuff like this happens, but ultimately what turned me off the most about this place was the staff at the front desk and the lack of information they were willing to provide about the situation. Anyway, on to the good stuff!
The one positive to staying at The Vendue was that they offer complimentary bike rentals. We took the bikes out on our first morning and cruised around the city, which was a blast! This was my first time biking in Charleston and I loved how many of the charming side streets I got to see.
After biking around we regrouped at the hotel and decided to check out The Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon. My Grandma recommended we do the dungeon tour and it did not disappoint! Thanks Grandma! The rest of The Old Exchange building was really interesting too. We spent about an hour or so there.
Other activities during the trip included: checking out Rainbow Row, exploring Church Street (there’s ton of signage along this street on the historic homes to tell you about their past), strolling through Waterfront Park, and of course trying new restaurants (my favorite activity… ha!).
Upon the recommendation of one of my favorite bloggers ever, Julia of Gal Meets Glam, we went to Basic Kitchen our first night and it did not disappoint! Even if you’re not a vegetarian, but you like interesting twists on food, then you’ll LOVE this place (and yes, they have meat on their menu). It is however the perfect place for vegetarians as their menu has a very large selection of vegetable dishes. Everything we ate was heavenly. My favorite dish might have been the carrot dip. Don’t question it, just order it (trust me)!
*Pro Tip for Basic Kitchen: We went on a Thursday night at around 8:30pm and the place was PACKED. We couldn’t get a table, so we just sat at the bar, which was totally fine! If you want to snag a table though, call and make a reservation just to be safe.
Another place that would be perfect for breakfast or lunch if you’re vegetarian (or even if you’re not, it’s SO good and also serves meat) is One Broad Street. Insider Tip: It’s located right across from The Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon so stop in for a meal either before or after your tour! I ordered the crispy rice and am still dreaming about it. Seriously though, I now look at rice differently. In a good way! My mom and sister ordered the avocado toast and loved it! My mom so much so that she wanted to go back again the next day!
