I’m so glad my mom suggested we check out the Greenwich Polo Club this past weekend to check out what a polo match was like! It’s one of their last matches this season, and I can’t believe it took us so long to make it there! The polo club is tucked away in the backcountry of Greenwich. Translation- it’s gorgeous! The perfect outing to complete the perfect weekend. Honestly!

My mom and I couldn’t believe how affordable going to a polo match is! I feel like it’s always a struggle to find things to do around here (Fairfield/Westchester County) aside from going out to eat. Now that I know these polo games are awesome, I’m definitely going to be hitting them up more often! Our bleacher tickets (that’s really where you want to sit to be elevated and also in the shade, were only $60/car. So whether you have 1 person or 6 people in your car, you’re paying the same price. There are of course plenty of more expensive ticket options, but we were very happy with our $60 ticket. (You can pay $150/2 people for VIP Lounge tickets, but those are located all the way at the end of the field, and you kind of want to be in the middle for the best view.)

If you head to the polo grounds early (around 1:00pm) you’ll be able to walk around the private art gallery they have on sight and you’ll also be able to make sure you have the best seating (if you choose the bleacher option that we did). The higher up on the bleachers the better view you have!

The match started at 3:00pm and went until around 5:00pm-ish. Warning- the time really flew by! We arrived at 3:00pm, but next time I think we’ll try to get there a little early to really enjoy all the grounds have to offer!

The polo match caters to children just as well as it caters to adults. Which is awesome…! If you get the inexpensive bleacher seats, like we did, alcohol isn’t included. That’s okay though because there is a pretty nice cash bar, where you can buy anything from a Kettle One speciality cocktail to a bottle of Veuve Cliquot (we went with the latter, duh!). If you’re not looking to drink, don’t worry! There are a variety of gourmet food trucks and the Longford’s ice cream truck was even there! I was really surprised to see how encompassing this event was. I don’t know many other activities in Fairfield County that offer this inclusivity at such an affordable price. Am I right?!

So anyway, here are the basic things you need to know about The Greenwich Polo Club! 

A match is split into 6 chukkers (each is 7 min and 30 sec long with a 3 min break in-between).

It’s spelt chuKKer, not chuCKer. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

Picnic chic is a thing. A polo thing. I love any excuse to dress up, and polo matches are the perfect place to do so! You can even throw on your over-the-top hat, as if you’re going to the Kentucky Derby!

Champagne is the preferred drink of choice. This kind of goes without saying…

You can bring your own picnic! (As long as you don’t bring catering-sized portions).

At half time you stomp the divots. This is when you go out onto the field and stop the divots back into the ground. It’s fun!

Sunscreen and a hat are your friend. You’ll most likely be in the sun, so make sure you’re protected.

#3 is the strongest player on the team. Enough said!
