Hi guys! I’ve been having a great week and hope you have too! A lot of exciting stuff has been happening with the blog, so much so that I’m pretty inspired to write a post about why being a micro influencer is awesome! Yep, you heard me right! A lot of bloggers on Instagram vent about how the social media platform inhibits their growth and how they’re so discouraged. Well, not me and I’m here to tell you to flip that frown upside down! Ughhh how cliché of me. Well, that hasn’t stopped me before!
Maybe you call us nano influencers, maybe you say micro, whatever you call us, we’re small! Taking a walk down memory lane, back in the beginning of my blogging career (this past August), I was just happy when three people were reading my blog each day, because that meant aside from my mom and dad (love you guys!) one stranger was reading it by choice! Ha! I mean, I think my parents enjoy reading my blog, but it’s their job to like my blog. Just like all those mush pots I brought home from elementary school that were supposed to be teacups or vases. Right? Right! So yeah, as long as one random person reads my blog each day, I’m thrilled! That’s what blogging is all about, although somehow I think this point gets easily forgotten. I started blogging to reach people, and even if I just reach one person, at least I am reaching someone and that’s what matters!
Howeverrrr more than six months into blogging and I’m now reaching a lot more than just one person (plus my parents)! Yay! An average day for Style Inherited has 40-60 readers, but other days I have over 120 blog views! One thing I still don’t get are a lot of comments in response to my blog posts, but that’s okay, baby steps! Keep reading to find out why I think being a micro influencer is awesome!
Okay enough of this whole memory lane stuff, here is the part where I say why I know being a micro influencer is awesome! Contrary to popular belief, micro influencers actually have a huge impact thanks to their high percentage of engagement. Bloggers with 100k followers are clearly doing something right, but of those 100k followers, maybe only 1% actually engage with their content. To use me as an example, I have 1,200 followers on Instagram. Each time I post a photo I get between 130-200 likes, so that means I have 14% engagement on average. That might seem low, but in the blogger world, that’s great!
And wait, there’s more! This might be an obvious point, but I’m still going to say it: being a micro influencer means the only way you can go is up, you really appreciate each small milestone, and you’re super approachable! I have seen so many bloggers on Instagram with around 10k followers complaining about how Instagram’s changes has had such a negative impact on their engagement and how they used to have so many more likes and comments on their photos. Luckily for me, nothing Instagram has done has affected my slow and steady growth. The more followers I get the more likes I get and that’s great! That’s a sign that people are following me because they actually care about what I have to say (or maybe they just find my Insta stories funny). I’m fine with either!
Continuing on…While I typically have the mindset of, what do I have to lose, when reaching out to brands (side note: YES you need to have this mindset. Don’t overthink it. Just do. Never reaching out to a brand is a form of rejection or defeat in itself, so again, what do you have to lose?) Okay, what was I saying? Right-there are some brands I just feel ridiculous approaching! I’m wayyyy to small for them. They won’t be interested in me. They don’t care about my following. But have you ever considered the other perspective? Brands and companies and other creatives who reach out to influencers always hope the influencer will say YES, but there’s also a chance they’ll get rejected. Staying in these peoples’ perspective, reaching out to a micro influencer greatly increases their chances of a partnership rather than a rejection! Micro influencers are eager to partner with brands to get their foot in the door. While you still need to make sure you’re partnering with companies or people that support your brand as an influencer/blogger, it’s not like you have an inbox full of emails from PR companies begging you to partner with them, so try not to say no unless the partnership really doesn’t make sense!
I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me as a micro influencer. Sure a lot of the times these “partnerships” are scams, but I’ve also met some incredible people as a micro influencer, and THAT my friends is why being a micro influencer is awesome! For instance, just a few weeks ago @johnstewart_photagraphy reached out to me via Instagram wanting to build a blogger portfolio. We’re now shooting together once a week or so! Would he have reached out if I had 10,000 followers? I don’t know. I do know there are plenty of bloggers in the area that have a much larger reach than I do, but I was one of the people he reached out to, so yay!
Did you find this blog post helpful? Would you like me to share more of my experience as a micro influencer/blogging from my micro influencer perspective? Thanks for following along! All photos in this post were taken by @johnstewart_photagraphy If you’re in the NYC/Westchester County/Fairfield County area and are looking for a photographer, he’s your guy!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on micro influencers vs. macro influencers (or are they just called influencers once they get to a certain point?). Do you feel like you effectively reach your audience? Lemme know!
