I’m wearing an XS in this super soft tell me somethin’ good tee and a 26 in these Levi shorts [side note: not sure why the models on FP’s website seem to show so much of their butt cheeks! I bought these specifically because they have great coverage and aren’t extremely short in the back!]

So what is sporting clays?
Sporting clays is an emerging sport that requires a shotgun, ammo, clays, and a sporting clays course. In a way you can compare it to golf, where the shotgun is your club, the ammo is your golf ball, the clays are your holes, and both use a course! Skeet shooting on the other hand is stationary so it doesn’t require a course. Each stand along the course “presents” the clays in a different way, meaning the clays will come from different directions/angles. If you’re wondering what a “clay” is, keep scrolling! I included a picture below.
Is it fun?
Yeah it is! Of course that’s my opinion and it depends what kinds of activities you enjoy. I love being outside and trying new things, so sporting clays seemed like an obvious thing to check off my bucket list. After my first time sporting clays, I woke up the next morning with a huge bruise on my shoulder socket (the shotgun has a strong kickback when you pull the trigger, and if you don’t have great upper body strength like me, then you’ll probably be a little sore the next morning), but even still I loved the experience! For me it was the combination of skill and excitement that got me hooked!
Orvis Sandanona Shooting Grounds
The Orvis Sandanona sporting clays course is the nicest I’ve been to thus far. Located in Millbrook, NY the 300+ acre facility is perfectly maintained. I mean, just look at these photos! Our instructor and guide were extremely helpful and patient, realizing that my mom, sister, and I are still new to the sport. The charming town of Millbrook is only a 10-15 minute drive away, making this the perfect day trip! Go shoot 100 rounds in the morning, work up an appetite, and enjoy a well deserved lunch at a casual cafe or one of the more upscale restaurants in Millbrook (we ate at Trattoria San Giorgio).
