Coming to you live this Monday morning with a unique post: how to de-fuzz your favorite sweater! So many of my favorite sweaters (aka my mom’s sweaters) have gotten pilled over the years, and unfortunately I haven’t been the best at keeping up with de-pilling/de-fuzzing them. Or whatever you want to call it. This Sunday I carved out an hour or so to test out this new gadget I bought off of where else, but Amazon and compared it to the classic method of “shaving your sweater.” If you didn’t think shaving your sweaters was a thing, well….it is.
The Remington Fuzz-Away Fabric Shaver seems awesome, and yes, it is pretty awesome. Who doesn’t love reviving their sweater to its former glory? Especially when said sweater cost a lot of money and definitely should NOT be pilling! I get so frustrated after I wear a sweater once and by the end of the day it already looks somewhat ratty. Uggh. #firstworldproblems
So after trying my Remington thinggy and sharing my experience on my Instastory on Sunday I had to put it to the test against a standard razor. Here’s what I thought:
Shaving your sweater is time consuming, but somewhat therapeutic (at least I think so). It took me about 5 minutes to do one whole sleeve of my sweater, that includes the front and back and then going over the sides again, which were a little tricky to get. I was super pleased with how it looked laying flat on my bed, but then I held it up to the light and realized that while the razor removed the pilling extremely well there was still a bit of fuzz stuck to the sweater. Basically, it looked better, but it didn’t have that new look I was hoping for.
Fast forward twenty minutes and I had finished the FRONT of the sweater. Yeah, just the front of it. Wow, did I really just waste twenty-minutes shaving a sweater? I don’t even spend that long shaving my legs! Again, it had the same look of being much better off than before, but still falling short of refreshed and new-ish. So I decided to try the higher-tech option….
Remington: B+/A-
Hmmm…okay so when I initially tried this gadget I was hooked! It seemed so cool and so efficient. That was after testing a small portion of my sweater. But clearly I needed to really put it to the test and then altering trying the razor I realized that the Remington wasn’t saving me any time. If anything, I was able to get rid of fuzz faster with the razor (with one clean, easy swipe over the sweater), while the Remington took time and care going back over the same spot several times until it caught the pill.
I might be wrong, but it does seem like the Remington has the ability to achieve a smoother sweater than the razor does, but again, that took a lot more time on my part to achieve that. While you can kind of just lay the sweater on your bed and shave it with the razor, with the Remington you need to have the sweater against a hard-ish surface. What I found worked best for me was having my hand behind the sweater to push back on the Remington. Bonus points, I was still able to sit in bed and be comfy.
Here is where the Remington takes a slight (or significant lead) depending on how much you hate dealing with fuzz…the Remington traps any and all fuzz/pills from the sweater in a compartment. Once you’re done/the compartment is full you can easily empty it over the garbage. Yippie for zero mess! With the razor, the fuzz kind of stays on the sweater until I ball it up with my hand, and then what am I supposed to do with it? I put it on my bedside table until I was done with a good portion of the sweater and then carefully collected it to toss it in the trash.
Do you know of any other methods to de-fuzz a sweater and get it back to looking like it’s brand new? If so, please share! I hope this post was somewhat helpful, if you have any questions, please let me know! Outfit details below…
jacket: Theory (affordable options here, here) • pants: AG • booties: Lucky Brand • sweater: Banana Republic (old, similar here) • bag: J. McLaughlin (old, similar here) • necklace: Madewell • sunglasses: RayBan
I love playing around with layering different lengths. My favorite way to do so is seen here with a longer sweater paired with a semi-cropped jacket. (This jacket is longer in the front and shorter in the back. And it’s perfect! (But that’s besides the point).
